Utility Mapping Technician - Hayward, WI

Summary: Work with small public utility water and sewer utility staff to collect and maintain data on the location, condition and history of their assets.  Work outdoors collecting data with a Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, transfer the collected data, scan paper as-built engineering drawings, and assist with digitizing and data entry into a GIS program.

Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work with utility staff to compile, organize, and review existing drawings and records pertaining to the utility’s assets and identify which information is current or obsolete.
  2. Program, operate and troubleshoot Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. 
  3. Operate and troubleshoot Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment in the field to collect the geographic coordinates and record attributes data for above ground assets.
  4. Ensure data is backed up properly on a daily basis.
  5. Scan paper documents including as-built engineering drawings. 
  6. Perform repetitive digitizing and data entry into a GIS program.
  7. Assist utility and local government staff in programming and learning how to operate GPS units, and end-user GIS web and mobile applications.
  8. Other duties and responsibilities as directed by supervisor.

 

 

Requirements

 Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 Education:

High school diploma or GED and ability to operate specific kinds of equipment.  Prefer at least two years of college, with coursework or experience using Arc Pad, or other GIS software.

 Experience:

One year work experience.  Preferably some experience working in an outdoor setting. Up to one year experience working with MS Word, Excel, and prefer one year experience working with GIS program.

 Additional Requirements:

  1. Initial and periodic Motor Vehicle Records checks, maintain a valid driver’s license, and maintain a safe driving record.
  2. Must have insured, dependable transportation available for daily use.
  3. Must submit to state and/or federal criminal checks.
  4. Must submit to initial drug and alcohol testing.
  5. Ability to be reached by cellular phone during business hours.
