Description

Position Summary:

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), under supervision and in a timely manner, accurately and precisely performs and reports laboratory test results according to established hospital and departmental policies.  Daily assumes responsibility for patient specimen testing and equipment maintenance. Daily interacts and responds to patients, physicians, and co-workers in a professional manner, remembering that patient care is our first concern.  The MLT assists in orientation of new laboratory personnel, promoting teamwork, positive attitude, initiative, and professionalism in accordance to the mission, vision, and values of the Hospital.  Supports the hospital in complying with DNV and CAP accreditation standards and accepts other duties as assigned to maintain the quality of service to the patient. May be required to work weekends, “on call” and/or work evening or night shifts.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs laboratory procedures in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines
  • Performs laboratory procedures in a timely manner
  • Performs laboratory procedures accurately and precisely in accordance to established quality control policies pertinent to the procedure
  • Assists in the laboratory and organizational compliance with accreditation standards of CAP, DNV, and other regulatory agencies
  • Adheres to all safety guidelines, such as Chemical Hygiene Plan, Standard Precautions/Exposure Control Plan
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information
  • Promotes team spirit through active cooperation and collaboration
  • Satisfactorily demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties outlined in this job description as well as continually demonstrates competency in performing the job duties.

  • Reports to:  Director of Laboratory
  • Supervises:  None  

 

Qualifications: 

  • Education:  Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent degree with the credit hours meeting ASCP registry eligibility standards required.
  • Licensure/Certification:  MLT(ASCP) registry or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one year generalist experience in an acute care facility preferred. 
  • Blood Bank competency preferred.

 

Required Physical Demands:    

  • Strength (Lift, Carry, Push, Pull):  Medium (Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects)
  • Standing/Walking: Constantly, activity exists 2/3 or more of the time
  • Keyboard/Dexterity: Constantly; activity exists 2/3 or more of the time.
  • Talking (Must be able to effectively communicate verbally): Yes

  • Color Acuity: Yes, must pass colorblindness test

            Level:   High

The position has high exposure to hazardous risks including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment and chemicals.   Staff members must understand and follow standard precautions.  Medium work volume and high degree of accuracy required.

Requirements

MLS (ASCP) - Must have general knowledge of laboratory testing and processes.

Will accept recent graduates.

 

MT Qualifications: 

  • Education:  Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent degree with the credit hours meeting ASCP registry eligibility standards required.
  • Licensure/Certification:  MT(ASCP) registry or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one year generalist experience in an acute care facility preferred. 
  • Blood Bank competency preferred.
