Description

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for, but not limited to, planning, organizing, directing, executing, and evaluating all aspects of the Laboratory for Community Hospital & Northwest Surgical Hospital.  Coordinates laboratory functions within Community Hospital (north and south campuses) and NWSH campuses with medical direction from the Medical Director. Assumes responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement and equipment maintenance.  Ensures the availability of competent staff to conduct the services of the departments.   Provides for the ongoing education of staff and promotes teamwork concepts within staff.  Works with employees to supervise personnel and ensure an efficient workflow in a positive work environment.  Responsible for revising, developing and implementing policies, procedures, PI activities and program planning.  Ensures that the Laboratory department meets all DNV, CAP, CMS, CLEA and State Health Department regulations.   Considers unique patient needs and demonstrates age-specific competencies.  Responds to all customers in a professional manner, remembering that patient care is our first concern.  Always works as a team member within the entire facility.   Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates laboratory functions across HPI including CH, CHOSAN, NWSH, and other clinical settings.
  • Oversees all patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance for laboratory services at all sites.
  • Participates in hospital wide education program for point of care testing and reporting.
  • Maintains knowledge of and compliance with applicable regulatory agencies (ie TJC, DNV, CMS, CAP, CLIA, and State Health Department).  Accountable for reporting requirements to regulatory agencies. 
  • Track/trend data for performance improvement and quality assurance to report to Tissue & Transfusion, Quality, Patient Safety, and other committees as requested.
  • Responsible for oversight, development, & communication of laboratory policies & procedures.
  • Responsible for financial oversight of laboratory services.
  • Requires good communication and organizational skills.
  • Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions, irregular hours, and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to specialty.
  • Satisfactorily demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties outlined in this job description as well as continually demonstrates competency in performing the job duties.

  • Reports to: VP Clinical Services/System CNO
  • Supervises: MT, MLT, Lab Assistant

Qualifications: 

  • Nationally recognized certification as MT (ASCP) or equivalent registry.
  • Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology with satisfactory completion of internship and completion of MR Registry Examination.
  • Minimum of 3 years acute care generalist experience with two years management experience preferred.

Environmental Conditions:       

          Level: High

High exposure to hazardous risks including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment and chemicals.  Hazards will be minimized if universal safety procedures are followed.  Must follow standard precautions.  May be required to work weekends or flex schedules.   Travel may be required.  Exposed to weather conditions during travel.

 

Requirements
